THE ROCK HALL SNUBS LINK AGAIN...OR HAVE THEY?

We just heard the news that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame passed over Link Wray again…or have they?

Let’s look at the “Early Influence” criteria on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website and see if Link Wray could be considered as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Early Influence inductee this year -

“These artists pre-date the birth of rock and roll, but have had a profound impact on music’s evolution and it’s iconic artists.”

Let’s break that criteria down, piece-by-piece -

“These artists pre-date the birth of rock and roll…”

Does Link Wray pre-date the birth of rock and roll?

Depends on what definition the Rock Hall uses for the “birth of rock and roll.” Some historians say rock and roll started with Jackie Brenston’s “Rocket 88” that was released in 1951. Others will say rock and roll started in 1954 when Bill Haley and the Comets released “Rock Around the Clock.”

This year’s Rock Hall inductee page has yet another version of the “birth of rock and roll” timeline when it quotes Ice Cube - “Rock and Roll is a spirit. It’s been going since the blues, jazz, bebop…” Using that quote, the “birth of rock and roll” moves back into the 1930’s and earlier.

So the actual “birth of rock and roll” has yet to be defined by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Link is still in the game.

**********

Now, let’s look at the last half of that “Early Influence” criteria -

“…but have had a profound impact on music’s evolution and it’s iconic artists.”

Did Link Wray have a profound impact on music’s evolution and it’s iconic artists?

Ask Bob Dylan, Steven Van Zandt, Pete Townshend, Iggy Pop, Jimmy Page, John Fogerty, Neil Young, Elvis Costello other Rock Hall inductees as well as members of the Rock Hall Nominating Committee, whose quotes can be found on this page. Terry Stewart, the past President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has said, “Rock and Roll would not be what it is without the contribution of Link Wray.”

The answer is a resounding “yes.”

Link is still in the game.

********

Finally, let’s take a look at the “musical timeline” of a couple recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Early Influence inductees -

FREDDIE KING - Started playing music in 1952, first records released in 1956.
WANDA JACKSON - Started playing music and first records released in 1954.

and compare them to

LINK WRAY - Picked up the guitar at 8 years old in 1937. First band formed in 1954, first records released in 1956.

Link Wray’s “musical timeline” is very similar with at least two Early Influence inductees.

Link is STILL in the game.

********

We realize the odds might be very slim, but - we are hopeful that Link Wray will be considered as an Early Influence Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee this year.

Early Influence inductees aren’t announced until all the Performer votes are in - probably around December. We’ll see.

Congratulations and good luck to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees this year.

NEWLY DISCOVERED 1963 LIVE RECORDINGS OF LINK WRAY!

ink Wray was a trail blazer. Link was the first to use intentional distortion in a rock recording. Link is also credited with inventing the “power chord.” His song RUMBLE - an instrumental - was banned for fear it would incite violence.

Rock and roll would never be the same after Link Wray.

From Bruce Springsteen to Iggy Pop, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin to Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, dozens of rock and roll legends cite Link Wray as a career influence. Heavy metal, surf, grunge, garage…they can all trace their roots to Link Wray.

Link and the Ray Men spent the early ’60’s playing frat parties on the college circuit up and down the East Coast. We have uncovered two classic Link tracks -
RUN CHICKEN RUN and RAWHIDE - and present them to you at their lo-fi, revved-up photo-punk best in our release LIVE IN ’63 at Cornell University!

NEWLY DISCOVERED RECORDINGS FEATURING LINK!

ray_vernon_45_cover_art2
Now available - “Worried Mind” and “You Can’t Break The Chains of Love” - THE LOST 45 from RAY VERNON, featuring DOUG and LINK WRAY!

RAY VERNON was the stage name of Vernon Wray, Link’s oldest brother.

Ray was signed to Cameo Records and had his first hit with "Evil Angel" in 1957. Cameo molded him as a teen idol and christened him
RAY VERNON.

Ray was an early member of Link Wray and the Ray Men. He soon moved "behind the scenes" in record production and management for several musicians - but he never stopped recording. He released several sides throughout his career, as well as the full length recordings
WASTED and SUPERSTAR AT MY HOUSE.

THE LOST 45 is the result of a recently discovered 1963 metal acetate disc containing two never-before-released classic country pop songs - “Worried Mind” and “You Can’t Break the Chains of Love.” Listen to these found treasures here!

We hope you enjoy these two songs and look for more recordings by this unsung legend of American Music.

DAN AUERBACH WANTS LINK IN THE ROCK HALL

iu
Rolling Stone magazine interviewed Dan Auerbach at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony last night, just before THE BLACK KEYS inducted STEVE MILLER. The best quote of the night?

"I don't care about (who's not in) the Rock Hall, except for Link Wray. He's not in the Rock Hall."

Thanks Dan! We hope they put you on the Nominating Committee next year!

THE LINK WRAY HOLY GRAIL

12342438_903990702983628_5514246784968968402_nA few months ago I received an eMail from a record collector advising that they had a RED vinyl Cadence 45 of Link's RUMBLE.

My first thought was that it must be a bootleg. Cadence never released RUMBLE on red vinyl. My second thought was that if it WAS a bootleg, certainly ONE more would have surfaced by now. I later discovered that Cadence pressed a few copies of an Everly Brothers 45 that were sent to radio stations. It's number was 1348, the next release after RUMBLE. So…if it was a legit pressing, still….more than ONE would have surfaced by now. Right?

As Paul Harvey would say, "And now, the rest of the story…"

This is a legitimate Cadence pressing and NOT a bootleg. The dead wax information revealed it was pressed by Monarch Plastics in February 1958, just over a month before being officially released.

The owner of this rare gem listed it on eBay with a $499 Buy It Now price. It sold in 20 minutes.

I am convinced that this was sent to radio stations and never sent to the general public. The red wax would have certainly stood out in a pile of black "new release" 45's on a radio station table.

This begs the question - why has only ONE surfaced in the last 57 years. There's little to no chance that Cadence pressed ONLY one. If you find the next one, please let us know!

GOLD VINYL RUMBLE ON RECORD STORE DAY NOVEMBER 27, 2015!

S315_productshot
The fine folks at Sundazed Records have done it again. On "Black Friday" - November 27, 2015, your local record store will have this limited edition, gold vinyl picture sleeve 45 of Link Wray's RUMBLE - the record that started it all.

From the liner notes -

"Released in April 1958, Rumble b/w The Swag was Link Wray's opening salvo. Overnight, Rumble completely changed the nascent rock 'n roll landscape. Full of crunch, swagger, menace and tribal tattoo rhythms, it was the sound of a switchblade slicing through the heart of tepid pop music.

Everywhere, budding musicians like Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend and thousands more replicated its distorted power chords in garages, basements and bedrooms. Playing Rumble was an essential rite of passage for any guitarist who wanted to harness the new music's mysterious dynamism. Without it, rock 'n roll as we know it would not exist."

LINK AND THE ROCK HALL

Just woke up to the news that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame passed over Link Wray. Again. My first thought was "that sucks."

But you know, after a dozen years of letters and petitions and trying to reach out, I'm finally figuring out that it really doesn't matter.

Link doesn't need the recognition of ONE house that recognizes a wide variety of musicians under the banner of "rock and roll."

Link Wray is recognized in EVERY house, garage or basement the first time a young guitar slinger straps on his axe, turns up their amp, rips a power chord and their parents yell "TURN IT DOWN! IT'S TOO LOUD!"

That my friends, is the REAL Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS...

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees now slated to be announced Thursday October 8th. May have been pushed off a couple days as Tuesday the Songwriters Hall of Fame announced their nominees. Stay tuned.

PRAYER REQUEST

Good thoughts and prayers requested for Tommy Webb, Link's son-in-law. He is currently undergoing testing for a lung transplant. Much appreciated!

THE LSD CROWD

temporaryfile-oioocytemporaryfile-bftytm"I just didn't want to be part of that. That's the reason I retreated to the Two Thieves club in (Lexington Park) Maryland. While all this hippie music was going' on and they were takin' this LSD, I was playing' Creedence Clearwater Revival and Elvis to the rednecks."

"SHACK TRACKS" REISSUED!

link-shack_383_383

The fine folks at Ace Records will be issuing LINK WRAY 3 TRACK SHACK at the end of this month. This double CD set includes Link's entire "Shack tracks" - LINK WRAY, BEANS & FATBACK and MORDICAI JONES.

Sharp Link fans may be asking how this one differs than the set put out a decade ago. Easy answer - quite a bit! This package has the correct track listings and are straight from the original master recordings. We have seen an advance of the inner booklet and it is outstanding - packed full of detailed liner notes and several photographs you probably haven't seen before. Ace is taking advance orders here.

JIM JAMES of MY MORNING JACKET digs LInk!

553f8f68801ffcbc36b308b9_jim-james-album-covers-link-wray
From the recent Vanity Fair interview , Jim James of My Morning Jacket picked his favorite album covers. He had high praise for Link's first Polydor LP.

"Perhaps the greatest rock 'n' roll record of all time, unknown to most folks. Link howls and moans, singin' "La De Da," and makes me feel right at home amongst the celebration and longing.

The cover features his face in profile, cut out so you can flip it over and find the record underneath. A treasure."

13 GUITAR RUMBLE!

If you are in the Los Angeles area on May 17, mark your calendar for the 13 GUITAR RUMBLE at the Redwood Bar.

This gig features a stellar line-up of guitar maniacs -

  • Surf guitar legend Davie Allan,
  • Pete Curry of Los Straitjackets
  • Deke Dickerson
  • lots more!

This event also features an appearance by the elusive BLIND RAGE. Definitely a show not to miss.

Best of all, it is ALL AGES, so bring your young guitar slinger!

If you are planning on attending, please send us your pictures!

MAY 2, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-05-02 at 11.24.36 AMMay 2, 2015?

  • It's Link Wray's birthday. He was born born 86 years ago today - May 2, 1929. Some news sites still report Link was born in 1935. When Rumble hit, the record company PR guy shaved six years off his age so he would appear younger to the teen set. His hometown of Dunn NC celebrates tonight with the 3rd Annual Link Fest.

  • There's a new Princess today. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed the birth of their new daughter today in England. She's going to ROCK!

CHUCK SAGLE 1927-2015

Chuck Sagle, the producer of many of Link's Epic records tracks, recently passed away.

Chuck was credited with discovering Carole King, and worked with many great artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, The Platters, Bobby Darin and others.

Chuck produced several classic Link sides including some early vocals as well as one of his best slow instros "Lillian," Link's ode to his mother.

It was during Chuck's time as producer that Epic released perhaps the coolest 45 ever waxed, the double Link vocal - "Mary Ann" b/w "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby."

RIP Chuck.

MYSTERY RECORD

REDRUMBLE1REDRUMBLE2
Just when you think you've seen it all, along comes something that takes you by surprise.

Have you ever seen a red vinyl copy of Link's RUMBLE 45? Neither have I.

First thought was that this was a bootleg, but certainly we would have seen at least ONE other copy in the past 50 years. Further inspection reveals the labels match early pressings, and the matrix numbers are looking right as well.

Cadence released in very limited numbers a red vinyl promo of an Everly Brothers 45, the very next release after Link's Rumble.

We believe this to be a promotional pressing of Link's Rumble. If you have any information on this recording, please drop us an eMail.

NC MUSIC HALL OF FAME

INDUCTION BOOK
Take a look at photos from the evening Link Wray was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.

PASSED OVER. AGAIN...

really
Link Wray was nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. But as everyone knows, he didn’t make the cut.

Since that time, Questlove and Steven Van Zandt spoke publicly in support of Link Wray. Jimmy Page and Jimmy Fallon played air guitar to a few chords of Rumble on the Tonight Show. The Governor of North Carolina declared Link’s birthday “Link Wray Day.” His profile had never been higher.

I had high hopes that this would be the year for Link Wray in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

After all, this is the man who...

- invented the power chord
- was the first to use intentional distortion in a rock and roll recording
- was the first Native American to sell over a million rock and roll records
- is in the top 50 of Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 GREATEST GUITARISTS
- has one of only 40 rock and roll songs in the National Recording Registry
- has had numerous Rock Hall inductees cite him as a career influence
- has the only rock and roll song (an INSTRUMENTAL) banned for fear it would incite teen violence
- played rock and roll for half a century, continually releasing new music
- and so much more

...would most certainly warrant an induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after a 31 year wait!

Nope. For reasons known only to the Nominating Committee, Link Wray was bypassed for nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Rock Hall Nominating Committee members Steven Van Zandt and Questlove have publicly supported Link Wray’s induction. To those gentlemen, and other members who supported Link, thank you.

There are those that blaze the trail, and there are those that reap the rewards. Link Wray was a trailblazer.

Link Wray was ahead of his time. Maybe one day the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will catch up with him.

THE CRITICS AGREE - LINK WRAY IN 2015!

The speculation on the upcoming nominations for the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of fame class is generating some heat on the Internet. Here’s a few pages listing various picks for the 2015 nominations. One thing they all have in common? LINK WRAY.

THE TWO THIEVES

TWOTHIEVESCLUB
“I’m very spiritual. I don’t do drugs, so I didn’t want to play to the LSD crowd. So I retreated down to a little place in Maryland called the Two Thieves club, playing to the rednecks where they were getting drunk off beer and whiskey.

I was doing CCR and the Elvis while the rest of the world was playing acid music.” - Link, “Fresh Air” Interview

LINK WRAY MYSTERY GIG

RAWHIDE PROMO
We recently came across a photo of this promo 45 of Link’s RAW-HIDE song. This 45 was released in 1959.

On the label, someone wrote ORPHEUM - APRIL 15 - 3 SHOWS.

In 1959 Link was on the GAC Spring Dance Party tour. This tour included the likes of Link and the Ray Men, Ray Vernon, Bill Parsons, the Kalin Twins, Jessie Lee Turner and the All American Boys.

We can find no record of a 1959 gig at an Orpheum venue, but it’s certainly possible this gig may have been played after 1959. Can anyone help fill in the blanks?

ERIC GEEVERS PHOTO COLLECTION

eric3
Eric Geevers was a member of Link’s band for several years in the mid 1990’s. He also played on Link’s two final releases, SHADOWMAN and BARBED WIRE.

Eric toured the world with Link, and you can hear some of his great stories over at the Link Wray Fan Group on Facebook.

Be sure to check out The Eric Geevers Collection of rare Link photos over at the PICS/VIDEO section of the website. Thanks Eric for sharing these with Link fans everywhere.

THE WORST LINK WRAY COVER SONG EVER!

MartyCooperLP
Ever heard of THE MARTY COOPER CLAN? Neither have we. But, back in 1963, RCA Records released this gem, NEW SOUNDS....OLD GOODIES by Marty. On this LP, Marty and his Clan SING rock and roll instrumentals of the day - including RUMBLE by Link Wray.

Thankfully, the music world never heard from ol’ Marty again.

If you dare, you can hear this “masterpiece” in our YouTube video below. Just remember, you can never get the next two minutes back again. Just don’t blame us. We warned you!

NEWLY DISCOVERED LINK MUSIC!

GORDONsomething1
The brand new Robert Gordon double CD “Somethin’ Else” features what is billed as a “full” Robert Gordon and Link Wray live concert recording from 1978. The CD ads state this unreleased Gordon / Wray concert is from January 20, 1978 in Rotterdam, NL. However, the photo included in the ads (below) was shot in Canada. The only record LinkWray.com has of a Gordon / Wray gig in Rotterdam that year is a two date stand in June at the Exit Club - but it is certainly possible they played Rotterdam twice that year.

You will find the track listings below. The first disc consists of a studio session from around 2012 with Robert, and the second disc is the concert featuring Link. All tracks on the second disc feature Link on guitar - but it’s interesting to note that FOUR solo Link live tracks are on this disc - RUMBLE and BABY WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO are the two standard numbers Link did on tour with Robert. It’s interesting to note that this disc also features LAWDY MISS CLAWDY and RAWHIDE live - interesting, as this would mark the first live recording of Link doing LAWDY MISS CLAWDY live.

We will have more to report as soon as we get a copy in-hand, as right now it’s only available in very limited numbers from overseas vendors.

IT GOT LOUD AGAIN....

Link fans got an unexpected surprise recently during an appearance by Jimmy Page on the Tonight Show. After an introduction by Jimmy Fallon, Page walks onto the show to RUMBLE. Just before sitting down he and Jimmy Fallon break out their air guitars and strum a few Link chords, in homage to the documentary “It Might Get Loud.”

Thanks to Rock Hall power hitter, Tonight Show bandleader, and ace musicologist Questlove for the selection of the intro music for Jimmy Page.

HISTORICAL MARKER UNVEILED IN DUNN

On May 2, 2014 - what would have been his 85th birthday - the town of Dunn North Carolina recognized the father of rock guitar with the unveiling of a historical marker commemorating the birthplace of Link Wray.

This marker is located at the corner of East Duke Street and South Clinton Avenue, a couple blocks off US 301 and a few minutes off Interstate 95.

Hey Rock Hall - are you listening yet?

VIDEO - LINK IN HAMBURG 1996

I love YouTube. Link’s son Shayne just came across some EXCELLENT footage of Link and the Ace-Men doing BATMAN at a club in Hamburg Germany in 1996. Pro-shot and well worth a look. I hope the rest of this gig surfaces soon.

You can find the footage on the

QUESTLOVE WANTS LINK IN THE ROCK HALL

questlove-600-1397237917
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame power hitter Questlove thinks Link should be in the Rock Hall. The excerpt below is from a recent Rolling Stone interview. Thank you Questlove for supporting Link Wray.

You mentioned Sonic Youth. Who do you want to get in?

I would like to see LL Cool J get in. After reading Rick James' autobiography, he was probably more rock, more arrogant, more brash. . . Rick James, I feel is worthy of it.
Link Wray. Once I got the list [of nominees this year], then I was like, 'Jesus Christ.' Even one of the guys on the committee, was like, 'Yo, how come you're not championing your father?' Six is so hard to choose. If they would do 10, it would be so much easier.

FULL INTERVIEW HERE. Catch Questlove weeknights on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. (Link Wray emphasis is ours!)

"FIRE AND BRIMSTONE" IN "MLB 14 -THE SHOW"

MLB14
Link’s song “Fire and Brimstone” from his first Polydor LP (recently covered by The Bootleggers and Ralph Stanley for the movie LAWLESS) has been selected as a cut on the soundtrack of the sports video game MLB 14 - THE SHOW.

The last version of this game sold over 300,000 copies, so this exposure will be good Link’s music. Rock Hall, are you listening?

$16,037.03 - SOLD!

82_2-201437215739_468x382
Link’s iconic Gibson guitar was auctioned today by the folks at Cooper Owen. This guitar traveled the world with Link and was used on such recordings as BULLSHOT, RUMBLE MAN and LIVE AT THE PARADISO.

This guitar was last auctioned around 2006. It was sold at that time, including buyer’s premium, for $20,294. It’s interesting to note that it brought more money than a Keith Richards acoustic guitar that was offered at the same auction.

The Gibson hit the auction block at 12:40 pm EST. Pre-auction estimates for the guitar was 8,000 - 13,000 UK pounds.

Bidding lasted less than a mnute with the new owner walking away with Link’s Gibson for 8,000 pounds. With the buyer’s premium the total price paid was $16,037.03 at today’s exchange rates - four grand less than what the guitar sold for previously. This is a very good investment by the new owner. When the Rock Hall finally gets around to doing the right thing, Link’s guitar is sure to appreciate.

LIVE IN DENMARK 1987 - VIDEO!

Man, you gotta love YouTube! Check out Link at City TV in Taastrup Copenhagen Denmark 1987. The video is near the top of the page.

This video is 20 minutes long (!!) and includes the unreleased song JESUS OF NAZARETH. This is the second time this song has surfaced. Link was thought only to have played it at his Washington DC Wax Museum gig in 1985. Here it is for a second time.

RARE CHANCE TO BUY LINK'S GUITAR

Link Wray’s Gibson guitar will be hitting the auction block soon. Link used this guitar on his LIVE AT THE PARADISO and RUMBLE MAN albums, as well as at gigs all over the world. See Link putting this guitar to work over at our VIDEO page.

This guitar was last auctioned off several years ago, along with Screamin’ Red. The guitar hits the auction block at 6:30pm - UK time - on March 21st. If you win it, let us know!

THE ROCK HALL'S MISSING LINK - AGAIN...

LinkWray.com extends our congratulations to those individuals and groups that were chosen for induction by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the Class of 2014 - Nirvana, Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt. The E Street Band will be given the “Award for Musical Excellence” and Beatles manager Brian Epstein and original Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers.

Who’s missing? Two words. Link Wray. No Link Wray in the performer category and no Link Wray in the Early Influence category. For 2014, there will be no Early Influence category inductee at all.

I spoke with Link’s eldest daughter Beth Wray Webb and on behalf of Link’s family, she wanted to extend her thanks to all of Link’s fans for the votes and overwhelming support for his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination and hopes for his induction. Link’s son Shayne comments, “I am proud to say his influence will continue to get a young inspired guitar player to pick up a guitar and play.”

Thank you very much to the Rock Hall Nominating Committee for doing the right thing and nominating Link Wray for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Those folks know their rock history and Link’s place in it.

It’s an honor that Link Wray was nominated, but it’s very disappointing when you realize that 2014 marks the 30th year without Link Wray in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That’s about 30 years too long.

ROCK HALL INDUCTEES COMING DECEMBER 17!

images-4
When I received a tweet from Future Rock Legends (follow them!) a couple hours before the 2014 nominees were scheduled to be announced, I was caught completely off guard. After over a decade of petition drives, websites and concerts organized by many - all with the goal of getting Link in the Rock Hall - had failed to accomplish their goal, it looked like the one person that deserved to be nominated - deserves to be inducted - might never get recognized.

I called members of Link's family that night with the nomination news and they were thrilled beyond words. They extend their thanks to the Nominating Committee and everyone else that has supported getting Link recognition.

It’s now December 10th. Here’s where we are in the induction process -

  • The fan ballot has closed. Thank you to the 18,337 who voted for Link Wray.
  • These votes place Link second from last on the fan ballot, and 58 votes behind Chic.
  • The top five vote getters on the ballot will receive one vote each - KISS, Nirvana, Deep Purple, Yes and Hall and Oates. Congratulations!
  • The ballots of the Voting Committee - 600 people - are due today.
  • The inductees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2014 will be announced on December 17.

Should fans of Link Wray be worried about the fact that Link scored low on fan ballot? Of course not.

Link Wray’s true hope on getting inducted lies in the remaining votes that were cast. Many of those votes came from music critics and historians who know the history of rock music, and how Link Wray’s contribution changed the face of rock and roll.

Every living Rock Hall inductee casts a vote as well. If those Rock Hall inductees ever used a Power Chord or distortion in their music...the music that got them to the Rock Hall...they owe a debt of gratitude to Link Wray. In just under a week, we will see if these folks said “thanks” by casting a vote for Link Wray.

R.I.P. "SWITCHY" - ADRIAN BAKER SWICEGOOD

Sending respect and condolences to the family of Adrian Baker Swicegood, also known as “Switchy”, the sax player on some early (Vendetta, Roughshod) Link Wray and the Ray Men tunes. A military veteran, he also played for a time with The Jaguars, featuring a young Charlie Daniels. April 10, 1928 - November 11, 2013.

LINK AND THE ROCK HALL - PRESS

Link Wray has been getting some press in support of his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nomination. You can find the articles at the top of our LINK IN PRINT page.

RUMBLE - DOCUMENTARY IN THE WORKS!

rumble_cover_image
Currently in the works! RUMBLE - THE INDIANS WHO ROCKED THE WORLD is a documentary film that will feature Link Wray, along with other musicians profiled in the Smithsonian exhibit UP WHERE WE BELONG - NATIVE AMERICANS IN POPULAR MUSIC that had a very successful run in Washington DC and New York over the past two years.

Scheduled to narrate this film are the likes of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Ringo Starr, Bootsy Collins, Slash, Brad Whitford and many others.

The tag line on the press release sums it up best - “We already know about the black and the white roots of rock, this is a look at Music history from a different perspective: THE RED ROOTS.”

More details as they are available. Read the official release here.

ANDREW'S HEART FUND

737482_1382504492.2523
Andrew Sayen is a little guy with a thing called Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. In a nutshell, it’s a thickening of a part of the heart. If left untreated, it will wear out quicker over time.

So, Andrew will be having a surgery to try to fix things, so that he can enjoy more time with his three siblings and his favorite things - Monster Trucks and the Washington Redskins!

Andrew is Link’s grandson. His mom Rhonda sang backup on a few tracks off Link’s BULLSHOT record.

There’s a fundraiser at the Winchester VA Moose Lodge on November 30, 2013. Lots of good things are planned - BAND OF TRIBES (featuring another Link grandson - Chris Webb) and Michael Hoover’s MEMORIES OF ELVIS show, along with raffles, door prizes and a silent auction.

If you can’t make it, please consider clicking here. Every little bit helps! The family thanks you for your consideration.

SO YOU WANNA BUY A LINK WRAY RECORD?

It seems that lately there are no less than half a dozen “new” Link Wray CD titles - SEVERAL DOZEN mp3-albums on Amazon. Double CD’s for under ten bucks? Downloadable albums for a few dollars? That’s hard to pass up, but let’s take a closer look…

It seems that over in the UK, any pieces of recorded music prior to 1962 went into the “public domain”. This means anyone and their brother can press a record or CD on ANY music older than 50 years and not pay a nickel to anyone who owns or recorded these music works…this includes a good number of Link Wray’s classic songs. (this has recently been extended to 70 years with the passing of “Cliff’s Law&rdquoWinking Let’s see how this has affected Link’s music…

MOONLIGHT WALK and YOUNG LOVE

Two recent offerings on Amazon on CD and mp3 are MOONLIGHT WALK and YOUNG LOVE. The Amazon ad said they were from “Mocking Bird” Records.  A quick check of Google…nothing on “Mocking Bird”…so I kinda had an idea what I’d be getting. It was even worse that I expected.

I didn’t get CDs…I got
cheap CD-r discs printed by Amazon on Demand.  ZERO liner notes - check!  ZERO pictures of Link - check!  ZERO songwriting credits, publishing house information, song times - check! ZERO information on the Mocking Bird company, well you get that too…or rather you don’t get that too.

The covers?  They are copied from legitimate Link Wray recordings that have already been released. "Moonlight Walk" is copied from the Chiswick / Ace Records album "Link Wray Early Recordings" that was released decades ago.  "Young Love" is clearly copied from the far superior "Slinky! The Epic Sessions" CDs on Sundazed.

Unknown tumblr_m3j30niAkx1r3vt9uo3_250
The music has all been released before…but this time with a twist. Instead of correct song titles, they have changed them. The alternate take of  ”Lillian” becomes “Lillian My Sun”.  ”Right Turn” alternate take becomes “Right Turn Left”.  (????)   An honest mistake or an attempt to get someone to download a “new” unreleased Link song?  Draw your own conclusion.

Link Wray deserves better than this slapped together money grab.

LINK WRAY AND THE WRAYMEN - THE DEFINITIVE EDITION

Unknown-1

Another title available recently is THE DEFINITIVE EDITION. This one came out around 2011. There’s a few things that make this one interesting - ROUGHSHOD (Scottie 45) and Link’s first waxing JOHNNY BOM BONNY. The other two choice cuts are from his brother Ray - DANGER ONE WAY LOVE and I’M COUNTING ON YOU. These tracks are all CD quality.

However…the track listing says this CD contains an alternate version of RUMBLE. It’s actually RAMBLE. Intentional or an honest mistake? I’ll leave that one up to you.

The cover comes with a sticker advertising “extensive liner notes and rare photos”. The photos and liner notes are extensive…ly copied from various websites and photo copyright holders with no credit given. No contact information is listed for the record company. Of course.

THE RUMBLING GUITAR SOUND OF LINK WRAY

Unknown

Nice packaging job on this double CD set, complete with a slide-over sleeve. This compilation offers a wide selection of Link tunes, but as wit the rest, they have all been done before.

Keeping in line with the releases of Link’s music as of late, this one credits TEENAGE CUTIE and GOT ANOTHER BABY to Link. C’mon folks - LUCKY Wray is oldest brother Vernon, not Link. These recordings were released as LUCKY WRAY with Link and Doug. Give credit where credit is due.

RUMBLES, RAW-HIDES, JACKS & ACES, 1956-1962
link-wray-rumbles-rawhides

Based on many of these “out of copyright” Link Wray releases, I wasn’t expecting much when I ordered the double CD RUMBLES, RAW-HIDES, JACKS & ACES. Boy, was I wrong.

Those other CDs pale in comparison with this one. What I received was a very well put together double CD with liner notes, detailed track listings with the histories of the song writers, publishers, original record companies, matrix numbers and original release dates. Two tiny errors though - HILLBILLY WOLF was first released on the DAVE DUDLEY FEATURING LINK WRAY AND THE RAYMEN LP, and FLIRTY BABY came out in the early 1990’s on the Norton Records MISSING LINKS set.

There is nothing new for a Link Wray fan as far as the liner notes and photos go - the stories have been told and the photos have been seen thousands of times. I do wish they would have given a photo credit to Kathy Wall, the polio stricken 14 year old rock fan who shaped the cover shot back in 1959. If you haven’t seen them, you owe it to yourself to see KATHY’S WALL, her INCREDIBLE scrapbook online. You will NOT be disappointed.

Same goes for the first CD. Nothing new - a collection of Link’s music that has been released and re-released more times than I can count.

The second CD is a different story. It was made for the hardcore Link Wray fan. Subtitled THE COLLECTOR’S LINK WRAY, we get Link playing on some sessions for family and friends, all cleaned up from the source vinyl and sounding great. A few of these tracks have been done before by the good folks at Norton, some tracks can be found on the THE DEFINITIVE EDITION CD above - but I did find some hidden gems.

This CD has both sides of brother Doug’s Epic Records 45, Bunker Hill, Marvin Rainwater, The Ponies, Bert and Ray, Chuck Bennett, Ray Vernon...they are all represented here. The two tracks that made this purchase worthwhile for me are YOU’RE SWEETER THAN SUGAR and 99 YEARS TO GO from the WRAY BROTHERS, two rare sides from Link, Doug and Vernon.

Overall, this one is worth your hard earned money, if only for the second CD.

SO WHAT DO YOU DO?

It’s tempting to pick up music on the cheap. But sometimes you get what you pay for. Some of these releases have some hidden gems, mostly long forgotten Link tracks all cleaned up and sounding nice. But remember those record labels who do Link Wray right. Those who spend the money to produce high quality recordings with extensive liner notes and rare photographs that aren’t borrowed from other sources.

You can’t go wrong with any Link Wray release on Ace, Rollercoaster, Sundazed or Norton Records. They do Link the right way.

FIRED UP!

Today we fired up our new Link Wray website. If you read the ABOUT US page under ETC. in the Navigation Bar, you’ll see we’ve been doing this for over a dozen years, from Link Wray’s Net Shack, to WraysShack3Tracks.com and now LinkWray.com.

WraysShack3Tracks.com was built with an old PC and FrontPage 2000 and hasn’t really been improved upon since. This is our first effort at building a website on a Mac (shoulda made the switch YEARS ago) so you’ll probably find a few glitches. We’ll do our best to get things running smooth.

In the not too distant future, we’ll be closing the WraysShack3Tracks.com site down and moving the content over here, then forwarding that URL to this address. So please update your bookmarks.
